Why Florida Pools Turn Green—and What to Do Next

Why Florida Pools Turn Green—and What to Do Next

A green pool can develop quickly in Florida, especially during hot weather, periods of heavy rain, or interruptions in circulation. While algae is the most common cause, it is not the only possibility.

Understanding why the water changed color is the first step toward restoring a clean, clear pool without adding unnecessary chemicals or damaging the equipment.

What Causes a Pool to Turn Green?

Low Chlorine Levels:

Chlorine helps control algae, bacteria, and other contaminants. When the available chlorine level falls too low, algae can begin growing on the pool surfaces and in the water.

Chlorine may be depleted by:

  • Strong sunlight
  • Heavy rain
  • Frequent swimming
  • Leaves and organic debris
  • Improper water balance
  • Equipment or circulation problems

In the Treasure Coast climate, warm water and abundant sunlight can make an under-sanitized pool change quickly.

Heavy Florida Rain:

Rain adds untreated water to the pool and can dilute the existing chemicals. Storm runoff may also introduce dirt, pollen, leaves, and other organic material.

After significant rainfall, the water should be tested before chemicals are added. Guessing can make the balance more difficult to correct.

Poor Circulation:

Pool chemicals cannot work effectively if the water is not circulating properly. A clogged basket, dirty filter, closed valve, low water level, blocked line, or malfunctioning pump can reduce water movement.

Areas with weak circulation may develop algae even when other parts of the pool appear clear.

A Dirty or Ineffective Filter:

The filter removes fine debris and dead algae from the water. When it is dirty, damaged, or operating incorrectly, the pool may remain cloudy or green even after the chemistry is adjusted.

Cleaning or backwashing the filter may be necessary during the recovery process, depending on the filter type and manufacturer’s instructions.

Unbalanced Water Chemistry:

Chlorine is less effective when the water chemistry is outside the appropriate range. The pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, calcium hardness, and sanitizer levels all influence water quality.

Adding more chlorine without first understanding the water balance may not solve the underlying problem.

Metals in the Water:

Not every green pool contains algae. Copper and other metals can sometimes create a green or blue-green tint, particularly after chemicals are added.

Green water caused by metals may remain relatively clear, while an algae problem often makes the water cloudy and the surfaces slippery. Proper testing is important because algae and metals require different treatment approaches.

Is It Safe to Swim in a Green Pool?

Swimming should be avoided until the cause is identified and the water is clear, properly sanitized, and chemically balanced.

Cloudy or green water can reduce visibility, making it difficult to see swimmers or the pool floor. An untreated algae problem may also indicate that the sanitizer is not adequately controlling other contaminants.

How to Help Prevent Green Pool Water

Consistent maintenance is the best defense against algae and unexpected water problems. A routine should include:

  • Regular water testing and adjustment
  • Consistent sanitizer levels
  • Brushing and skimming
  • Vacuuming when needed
  • Cleaning baskets and filters
  • Monitoring pump operation and circulation
  • Checking the pool after heavy rain
  • Addressing equipment problems promptly

A pool can look clear while its chemistry is beginning to drift. Regular testing helps identify changes before they become larger problems.

When to Call a Pool Professional

If your pool water turns green, contact Poolcrest before adding more chemicals or attempting multiple treatments. Green water may be caused by algae, unbalanced chemistry, poor circulation, filtration problems, or metals—and each issue requires a different approach.
